Required training

When Is Harassment Prevention Training Required in California?

The five-employee threshold is the starting point; timing, audience and trainer requirements also matter.

Quick answer

California employers with five or more employees generally must provide sexual harassment and abusive-conduct prevention training every two years.

Who receives what

Supervisory employees generally need at least two hours; nonsupervisory employees generally need at least one hour. New or promoted supervisors and certain seasonal or temporary employees can have shorter completion timelines.

What to track

Keep dates, duration, audience, trainer information and completion records. Make sure employees can understand the training language and examples.

Use current official guidance

Requirements can change. Confirm timing and trainer standards with the California Civil Rights Department.
